How to Get Hired in 2023: The 5 P’s for Interviewing Well
The number of retiring boomers has increased since the pandemic, leaving holes in the labor market. If you are looking to fill one of those gaps, now is the time to sharpen your interviewing skills. Has it been a minute since you’ve been on an interview? Have some recent not-so-successful interviewing experiences stopped you from pursuing new positions? Whether you are a pro or need practice, we have some basic pointers that can help you to secure that role!
Here are our 5 Ps for Interviewing Well:
Participate in the discussion.
A prospective employer needs to know you really want the position that you’re applying for. Don’t just answer questions, ask them. Demonstrate that you have an interest in the job.
Put yourself together.
While a lot of workplaces may have tossed the suit and tie, looking professional is still a thing. The athleisure that was acceptable while working from home? Not going to cut in an interview. Dress appropriately.
Practice makes perfect.
Sit down with a friend and do a trial run. Fielding questions from someone in a lower-pressure situation can be helpful. A little practice before your interview can help to calm your nerves before the real thing.
Prepare for standard questions.
We’ve all heard them before. “List your strengths.” “What are your weaknesses?” “How do you handle conflict?” Have answers ready for the obvious questions. Knowing the answers to common questions that you can anticipate gives you more headspace to field the tougher curve balls that might come your way.
Promote yourself.
Don’t shy away from demonstrating what you can bring to the position. How are you a better fit for the job than other applicants? If you aren’t the typical candidate, discuss how your unique skill set can be beneficial.
There’s no time like the present to take the plunge. With a little prep work, you could be ringing in the new year with a new job!
